Central Michigan traveled to Acrisure Stadium looking to build on its season-opening win, but Pitt flexed its ACC muscle in a 45–17 defeat of the Chippewas. While CMU showed flashes of fight — the Panthers’ passing attack and defensive front proved too much. Here’s whose stock rose — and whose fell.
📈 Stock Up
QB Joe Labas
Labas went 11-for-14 with 89 yards and a touchdown, providing stability when CMU needed it. His efficiency (78.6% completion rate) kept the offense moving in spurts, and his six-yard TD strike to Decorion Temple in the third quarter briefly gave the Chippewas momentum.
WR Decorion Temple
Temple not only hauled in that third-quarter touchdown but also chipped in three catches overall. He showcased dependable hands and the ability to win in the short-to-intermediate game, something CMU will need as they dive into MAC play.
LB Jordan Kwiatkowski
On the defensive side, Kwiatkowski led with eight total tackles and grabbed a momentum-shifting interception late in the first half that set up CMU’s lone rushing touchdown. His versatility in both coverage and run support stood out in an otherwise tough day for the defense.
📉 Stock Down
The Running Game
CMU finished with just 40 rushing yards on 41 attempts — a 1.0 yard-per-carry average. Pitt’s defensive front dominated the line of scrimmage, and no running back was able to generate explosive plays.
Pass Protection
The Chippewas allowed four sacks and consistent pressure, disrupting timing for all three quarterbacks who saw snaps. This lack of protection limited downfield chances and left CMU in long-yardage situations.
Second-Half Defense
After cutting the deficit to 24–17 in the third quarter, CMU’s defense faltered. Pitt scored 21 unanswered points to close the game, highlighted by explosive strikes from QB Eli Holstein. Missed tackles and blown coverages let the Panthers pull away.
➡️ Holding Steady
K Cade Graham
Graham converted his lone field-goal attempt from 41 yards and hit both extra points. His reliability continues to be a quiet bright spot for the Chippewas.
Final Word
Central Michigan’s flashes of offensive rhythm and opportunistic defense weren’t enough against a deeper, more physical Pitt squad. How these players trend will be crucial as the Chippewas prepare for next week’s matchup, where limiting negative plays and finding a ground game will be priorities.
