Stock Up, Stock Down: Rockets Roll Past Western Kentucky

Dalton Tinklenberg September 9, 2025 2 minutes read
Western Kentucky, Toledo

Toledo Athletics

Toledo wasted no time setting the tone at the Glass Bowl, racing to a 21-7 first-quarter lead and never looking back in a 45-21 rout of Western Kentucky. The Rockets’ ground game and opportunistic defense overwhelmed the Hilltoppers, who slipped to 2-1 on the season. Here’s whose stock rose — and whose fell.

Stock Up

Chip Trayanum, RB, Toledo
Trayanum was the clear star of the night, pounding Western Kentucky for 163 yards on just 14 carries — an eye-popping 11.6 yards per rush. His highlight was a 75-yard touchdown sprint early in the third quarter that broke the game wide open. He also added a 10-yard receiving score, showing his versatility.

Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, DB, Toledo
The junior defensive back delivered the knockout punch early. He jumped a route in the first quarter and returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown, putting Toledo up 14-0 less than four minutes into the game. He also finished with three tackles and another pass breakup.

Junior Vandeross III, WR, Toledo
Explosive plays were Vandeross’s calling card. He hauled in five catches for 122 yards, including a 71-yard touchdown strike before halftime that buried WKU’s hopes. His ability to stretch the field gave the Rockets’ offense another dimension.

Stock Down

Maverick McIvor, QB, WKU
While McIvor’s stat line — 274 yards and two touchdowns — looks respectable, it masks early struggles that put WKU in a hole. He threw a costly pick-six on the Hilltoppers’ second possession and failed to convert in key red-zone chances during the second quarter.

WKU Rushing Attack
The Hilltoppers mustered just 59 rushing yards on 28 attempts, averaging 2.1 yards per carry. No running back topped 22 yards on the night, leaving the offense one-dimensional and easy to defend.

WKU Defense
Allowing 508 total yards, including 307 on the ground, WKU’s defense had no answers for Toledo’s balanced attack. Missed tackles and poor gap discipline led to explosive plays, particularly Trayanum’s long touchdown run.

Holding Steady

Moussa Barry, WR, WKU
Barry continued to be a reliable target, posting three catches for 110 yards, highlighted by a 39-yard grab. Even as the Hilltoppers struggled, Barry’s big-play ability gave them brief sparks.

Closing

How these players trend will be crucial as Western Kentucky prepares for its next opponent. The Hilltoppers will need sharper execution and more balance on offense, while Toledo will look to ride its resurgent ground game and opportunistic defense into the coming weeks.
