Illinois Athletics
Illinois kept its early-season momentum rolling with a 45-19 road win at Duke, pulling away behind a sharp passing attack and opportunistic defense. The Illini outscored the Blue Devils 31-6 after halftime to move to 2-0 on the year. Here’s whose stock rose — and whose fell.
📈 Stock Up
Luke Altmyer (QB)
Altmyer delivered another efficient performance, finishing 22-of-31 for 296 yards and three touchdowns. It marked his sixth career game with at least three TD passes, continuing a steady run since shaking off his early struggles in 2023. With no turnovers against Duke, Altmyer now owns 38 touchdowns to just nine interceptions across his last 21 games.
Hank Beatty (WR)
Beatty was everywhere, tallying a career-high 128 receiving yards on eight catches and even adding a 25-yard rushing score on a trick play. His 153 total yards highlighted his versatility and made him the go-to playmaker in key moments. Back-to-back 100-yard outings cement his emergence as a true weapon in this offense.
Illinois Defense (Takeaways)
The Illini forced four turnovers, including fumble recoveries by Tyler Strain and Matthew Bailey, plus a late interception by Tanner Heckel. Gabe Jacas also added his third sack in two games, climbing to fifth on the program’s all-time sacks list. The unit turned defensive stands into offensive opportunities, breaking the game open after halftime.
📉 Stock Down
Offensive Line Protection
Despite the win, Illinois allowed four sacks and consistent pressure on Altmyer. Duke defenders Vincent Anthony Jr. and Kendall Johnson each got home, showing that the Illini still have work to do in protecting their quarterback against top-tier pass rushers.
Running Efficiency
While Illinois scored three rushing touchdowns, the ground game averaged just 2.9 yards per carry on 42 attempts. Outside of Beatty’s trick-play score and Ca’Lil Valentine’s late 23-yard burst, the run game struggled to sustain consistent chunk plays.
➖ Holding Steady
Kaden Feagin (RB)
Feagin once again provided a steady presence in the backfield, punching in a 1-yard score in the first quarter and finishing with 17 carries for 48 yards. His bruising style gives the Illini reliability in short-yardage situations, even if the big plays weren’t there.
Closing
Illinois showed the balance of a complete team in its win over Duke, with playmakers stepping up on both sides of the ball while leaving areas to clean up. How these players trend will be crucial as the Illini prepare for their next test.
