Jedd Fisch spent much of his second season waiting for his Washington team to put together a complete performance away from home. When it finally arrived, it came with a flourish.
Behind a second-quarter avalanche and a suffocating defensive effort, Washington rolled past Boise State 38-10 on Saturday night in the Bucked Up LA Bowl hosted by Gronk, closing the season with its most decisive win under Fisch.
After a quiet opening quarter, the Huskies seized control in emphatic fashion. Washington erupted for nearly 250 yards of offense and three touchdowns in the second period alone, turning a 3-0 deficit into a commanding halftime lead and never allowing the Broncos back into contention.
Sophomore quarterback Demond Williams Jr. was the catalyst, finishing with 214 passing yards and four touchdown throws while accounting for five total scores. His breakout moment came early in the second quarter, when he found Denzel Boston streaking untouched down the middle of the field for a 78-yard touchdown that ignited a stretch of 38 unanswered Washington points.
Boston, who is weighing an early jump to the NFL, looked every bit the part against a Boise State defense that had been among the nation’s best. The junior wide receiver caught six passes for 125 yards, consistently creating separation and stretching the field. Williams spread the ball effectively, also connecting with freshmen Dezmen Roebuck and Raiden Vines-Bright before delivering his sharpest throw of the night — a 32-yard strike to tight end Quentin Moore to open the third quarter.
Roebuck’s six-yard touchdown late in the first half gave him seven receiving scores on the season, a school record for a freshman.
Washington’s defense was equally dominant, overwhelming the Mountain West champions from start to finish. The Huskies intercepted five passes, including two by sophomore cornerback Leroy Bryant, and repeatedly collapsed the pocket with steady pressure up front. Linebacker Xe’ree Alexander, nickelback Rahshawn Clark and defensive lineman Deshawn Lynch each added takeaways as Boise State struggled to sustain drives.
Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen exited late in the first half with a toe injury and did not return, leaving Max Cutforth to face a relentless Washington defense. The Broncos were limited to fewer than 100 yards through three quarters and managed only one touchdown in the closing minutes.
With the outcome no longer in doubt, Fisch pulled Williams in the fourth quarter to give senior Kai Horton snaps in his final collegiate game. Williams completed 62 percent of his passes and added modest production on the ground in what capped a promising sophomore campaign.
Washington (9-4) closed the season with momentum and optimism, buoyed by a young core on both sides of the ball. As Fisch now turns toward the offseason and the transfer portal, the Huskies leave Los Angeles having delivered a statement performance that underscored how bright the program’s trajectory may be.
