The wait is finally over. Vanderbilt opens its 136th season of football Saturday night at FirstBank Stadium, welcoming Charleston Southern to Nashville for a 6 p.m. kickoff on ESPN+/SECN+.
The Commodores have made a habit of starting fast under Clark Lea. They’ve won three straight season openers, their longest streak since the mid-70s, and they’ll look to extend that against a Buccaneers program coming off a tough 1–10 season. History is on Vandy’s side too—the Dores are 83-48-4 all-time in season openers.
This isn’t just the start of a new season. It’s also the debut of Vanderbilt’s sparkling new south end zone facility, complete with everything from loge boxes to field-level seating and, most importantly, a new gameday locker room. The project has been a major point of pride for the program, signaling progress both on and off the field.
On the field, Vanderbilt’s offense has momentum thanks to second-year coordinator Tim Beck. Last year, the Commodores quietly finished 28th nationally in offensive efficiency, their best ranking since 2005. They took care of the football better than anyone in the country—just seven turnovers all year—and they were nearly automatic in the red zone, scoring on over 93 percent of trips. Beck’s work earned him a semifinalist nod for the Broyles Award, and now he’ll look to build on that foundation.
All eyes will also be on Martel Hight, who isn’t just locking down wideouts this year—he’s joining them. The veteran cornerback will play both ways in 2025 after flashing his playmaking skills last fall with two interceptions, four pass breakups, and a punt return touchdown. If he brings that same juice to the offense, he could be one of the SEC’s more fascinating storylines this fall.
Leadership is strong in the locker room with eight team captains, including returners Richie Hoskins, Langston Patterson, Diego Pavia, and Marlen Sewell. Eli Stowers, meanwhile, has been showered with preseason accolades, landing on just about every All-America list imaginable. He’s also a preseason first-team All-SEC selection, the first Commodore to earn that kind of national hype since 2013.
Charleston Southern enters under first-year head coach Gabe Giardina, who takes over after the Buccaneers endured a rocky 2024. Quarterback Taye King is expected to lead the offense, while linebacker Brevin East and defensive back Ryan Stokes anchor the defense. The Bucs will have their hands full trying to slow down an SEC roster, but they’ll bring plenty of energy into Nashville.
For Vanderbilt, this is about handling business, setting a tone, and showcasing the new-look program in front of its home crowd. With a manageable nonconference slate, starting 1–0 is non-negotiable if the Commodores want to make a push toward bowl eligibility.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday. For Vandy, it’s time to put months of buildup into action.
