Akron traveled to Lincoln on Saturday and ran into a buzzsaw, as Nebraska rolled to a 68–0 win at Memorial Stadium. The Zips were shut out for the first time this season, managing just 175 total yards while the Huskers piled up 728 yards of offense.
1. Quarterback Play Remains a Concern
Akron’s quarterbacks never found rhythm against Nebraska’s swarming defense. Starter Ben Finley went 7-of-21 for 54 yards, while Michael Johnson Jr. added just 8 yards passing and finished with negative rushing yards due to sacks . Neither quarterback threw an interception, but the inability to stretch the field (longest completion just 19 yards) left the Zips one-dimensional. By contrast, Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola torched Akron with 364 yards and four touchdowns.
2. The Defense Wore Down Quickly
Akron’s defense showed early resistance—forcing a fumble at the goal line in the first quarter—but it couldn’t hold up under the pressure. Nebraska’s balance was overwhelming: 494 passing yards, 234 rushing yards, and touchdowns from a variety of skill players . Emmett Johnson led the way with 140 rushing yards, two rushing scores, and a touchdown reception.
The Zips also struggled on third down, allowing Nebraska to convert 8 of 10 attempts.
3. Big Picture: A Long Road Ahead for the Zips
This game illustrated the gap between Akron and Power Five competition. The Zips averaged just 3.0 yards per play and went 1-for-14 on third down . Special teams miscues (a blocked field goal and a missed kick) added to the frustration. At 0–2, Akron must regroup quickly before diving deeper into its nonconference slate. Nebraska, meanwhile, notched its first shutout since 2009 and showcased one of the most explosive offensive performances in school history.
Akron now turns its attention to UAB, while Nebraska looks to carry momentum into its upcoming matchup.
