Purdue kept its early-season momentum rolling on Saturday night, grinding past Southern Illinois 34-17 in front of 54,663 fans at Ross-Ade Stadium. The Boilermakers are off to their first 2-0 start since 2021, giving new head coach Barry Odom a historic beginning to his tenure — no Purdue coach had opened his career with consecutive wins since Cleo O’Donnell in 1916.
The game opened at a frantic pace, with both offenses trading touchdowns on each of their first two possessions to tie things at 14-14 after a quarter. While the Salukis threatened to turn the matchup into a shootout, Purdue’s defense adjusted quickly, forcing a punt late in the opening frame and holding Southern Illinois without another touchdown the rest of the way.
From there, the Boilermakers leaned heavily on senior running back Devin Mockobee, who turned in one of the most rugged performances of his career. Mockobee carried the ball 32 times for 126 yards and two scores, the most attempts he has ever logged in a game. His steady production helped Purdue control possession for nearly 37 minutes and wear down the Saluki front.
Quarterback Ryan Browne managed the offense with poise, finishing 14-of-23 for 170 yards and two touchdowns. He connected with Arhmad Branch for a 13-yard strike in the first quarter and later found Georgia transfer Nitro Tuggle for a 29-yard score — the first of Tuggle’s Purdue career. Browne also scrambled effectively, picking up 50 yards on the ground to keep drives alive.
Defensively, Purdue delivered in the trenches after a shaky start. Charles Correa’s sack on a 3rd-and-1 late in the first quarter stalled an SIU drive and shifted the tone, while defensive end CJ Nunnally IV closed the door in the fourth quarter with back-to-back sacks that pushed the Salukis 18 yards backward. Linebacker Tahj Ra-El paced the group with seven solo tackles as Purdue limited SIU to just 81 rushing yards on 26 attempts.
Special teams also held up their end. Kicker Spencer Porath stayed perfect on the year, drilling a 25-yarder and later converting from 43, the second-longest field goal of his career.
With the win secure, Purdue now turns its attention to a historic Big Ten clash. The Boilermakers welcome USC to Ross-Ade Stadium next Saturday, marking the Trojans’ first trip to West Lafayette since 1976. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on CBS.
