In front of a sold-out Gies Memorial Stadium crowd of 60,670, No. 9 Illinois rolled to a 38-0 shutout win over Western Michigan on Saturday night, extending its winning streak to seven games — tied for the nation’s longest active streak alongside Ohio State and Memphis.
The Illini (3-0) controlled the game with balance and depth, outscoring the Broncos 28-0 after halftime and posting their first shutout of the season. Illinois has now outscored opponents 80-9 in the second half through three weeks and has not allowed a touchdown at home in its last eight quarters of play.
Altmyer Leads Efficient Attack
Quarterback Luke Altmyer completed 17 of 26 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns while also running in a score. He found a rhythm in the second half, at one point completing 11 consecutive passes.
Hank Beatty paced the receiving corps with six catches for 53 yards and his first touchdown grab of the year, while Ashton Hollins added his first two receptions of the season — one a 35-yard strike and the other a 6-yard touchdown, the first of his career.
In the backfield, Kaden Feagin carried 20 times for 100 yards and a score, his second career 100-yard game. Ca’Lil Valentine chipped in 63 yards on 10 carries, highlighted by a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Defensive Stand Defines the Half
Illinois led 10-0 at the break thanks to Beatty’s six-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter and a 28-yard David Olano field goal in the first. The biggest moment, however, came when linebacker Kenenna Odeluga stuffed Western Michigan on fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line to close the half.
The defense suffocated WMU throughout, allowing just 204 total yards and holding the Broncos to 3-of-14 on third downs. Matthew Bailey and Malachi Hood each tallied six tackles, while Leon Lowery Jr. and Pat Farrell recorded sacks.
Second-Half Surge
Feagin powered in from three yards out to open the third-quarter scoring, followed by Altmyer’s two-yard keeper to make it 24-0. Hollins’ touchdown catch pushed the lead past 30 early in the fourth, and Valentine capped the scoring with his short-yardage plunge.
Illinois finished with 358 yards of offense (162 rushing, 196 passing) compared to Western Michigan’s 204. The Illini were a perfect 6-for-6 in the red zone and, notably, have yet to commit a turnover this season — their first such three-game stretch since at least 1995.
Historic Night in Champaign
Saturday marked Illinois’ first shutout since 2024 (45-0 over Eastern Illinois) and the program’s first sellout against a non-Power Four opponent since 1986. Bret Bielema’s squad is now 8-0 in its last eight nonconference games and has won three straight sellouts at Gies.
The Illini hit the road next weekend for their Big Ten opener at No. 22 Indiana. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on NBC.
