Illinois flexed its depth on both sides of the ball Saturday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium, pulling away in the second half for a commanding 45-19 win over Duke. The victory pushes the Fighting Illini to 2-0 on the season and marks Bret Bielema’s 30th career win at Illinois, tying him for seventh all-time in program history.
After a tight first half that saw Illinois lead just 14-13, the Illini outscored the Blue Devils 31-6 after the break to put the game away. The turning point came early in the third quarter when Duke was flagged for multiple players wearing the same number on a punt. Illinois capitalized, with Luke Altmyer hitting Justin Bowick on a 4-yard slant to extend the lead. From there, the Illini defense and ground game took over.
The defense forced five turnovers on the day—four fumbles and one interception—while the offense did not commit a single giveaway. Matthew Bailey, Tanner Heckel, and Gabe Jacas all had a hand in stripping the ball, while Heckel added his first career interception in the fourth quarter to halt a potential Duke comeback.
Altmyer was sharp throughout, finishing 22-of-31 for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Hank Beatty delivered a breakout performance with eight catches for a career-high 128 yards, plus a 25-yard rushing touchdown on a wildcat play. Bowick added four receptions for 50 yards and a score, while Collin Dixon hauled in his first career touchdown late in the fourth quarter. On the ground, Kaden Feagin led the way with 48 yards and a touchdown, and Ca’Lil Valentine iced the game with a 23-yard rushing score.
The Illini’s 45 points marked their highest road output since 2015 and the second straight game with 45+ points to open the season—a feat accomplished only once before in program history (1942). The margin of victory (26 points) also stands as Illinois’ largest in a road game since a 41-3 rout at Northwestern in 2022.
For Bielema, the win carries added significance. It was his 30th at Illinois, tying him with John Mackovic for seventh-most in school history, and he became the fourth-fastest coach in program history to hit the milestone. The Illini also notched their first nonconference road victory since 2019.
Illinois will return home next Saturday, Sept. 13, to host Western Michigan under the lights at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CT.
