Middle Tennessee returns home this weekend for its Homecoming matchup, welcoming former Conference USA rival Marshall back to Floyd Stadium.
The Blue Raiders (1-2) are looking to bounce back after a tough road loss and carry some momentum into the heart of their schedule. The Thundering Herd (1-2), now led by first-year head coach Tony Gibson, come to Murfreesboro seeking to even their record and reassert themselves in a series that has historically been razor-thin.
This will be the 12th meeting between the programs, with Marshall holding a narrow 6–5 edge. The last time they squared off, in 2021, MTSU came away with a 34–28 win in Huntington.
For the Blue Raiders, quarterback Nicholas Vattiato remains the centerpiece. The senior has already thrown for 548 yards and four touchdowns this fall, pushing his career total to 8,072 yards — second-most in program history and fourth among active FBS quarterbacks. If the offensive line can keep him clean, Vattiato has the experience and composure to test a Marshall defense that prides itself on pressure.
Defensively, MTSU has quietly been disruptive. The unit ranks 27th nationally in tackles for loss, averaging 7.3 per game. That kind of backfield penetration will be key against a Marshall offense that mixes physical downhill runs with opportunistic passing. The Blue Raiders must be disciplined in tackling and avoid allowing the Herd to pick up easy chunk plays on the ground.
Special teams could tip the balance. Freshman kicker Baylen Woodman has been automatic on kickoffs, driving eight of his nine attempts into the end zone for touchbacks, while return man Parker Hughes continues to be a threat. Field position is always a hidden factor in these kinds of matchups, and both staffs know how to use it.
What to Watch For:
- Can Vattiato and the offense find rhythm early and finish drives?
- Will the defense continue its disruptive play and keep Marshall’s ground game in check?
- Which special teams unit makes the bigger impact in the field position battle?
Kickoff is set for Saturday evening in Murfreesboro, where MTSU will look to even the all-time series and give the Homecoming crowd a performance to remember.
