Terps QB recognized by the league after tossing three touchdowns in debut

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After throwing for 258 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in his collegiate debut, Terrapin quarterback Malik Washington has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Washington completed 27 of his 43 pass attempts in Maryland’s 39-7 season-opening win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday. The three TD passes were the most in a true freshman’s debut in the Big Ten since 2009 and the most by a true freshman in a Power Conference since 2018 (Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence).

Washington’s 27 completions were the most by a Maryland true freshman quarterback in a game in school history. It was also the most completions by a true freshman in a Power Conference debut since Jaxson Dart (USC) had 30 against Washington State in 2021.

A Glen Burnie native who attended nearby Archbishop Spalding, Washington became just the seventh true freshman quarterback to start a game in Maryland’s history and he was the first to start a season opener since Perry Hills in 2012.

Washington and the Terps are back in action on Friday, hosting Northern Illinois. The game is set to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. and will air on Big Ten Network and the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
