Week 1 gave us a reminder of what #MACtion can be—close finishes, special teams fireworks, and the emergence of some new names who look ready to carry the torch this fall.
Bowling Green makes a statement in George’s debut
The Eddie George era at Bowling Green opened with a 26-7 win over Lafayette. The Falcons wasted no time, striking with a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown by Cameron Pettaway. After a lightning delay, BGSU leaned on kicker Jackson Kleather, who drilled four field goals, including a 56-yarder that was the program’s longest since 1995. The Falcons look dangerous on special teams and opportunistic in all three phases.
Central Michigan shows toughness out west
Matt Drinkall’s debut as CMU’s head coach couldn’t have gone better. The Chippewas snapped a long road losing streak by grinding out a 16-14 win at San Jose State. The defense forced three turnovers in the first half, while Trey Cornist’s 29-yard touchdown run gave the offense just enough cushion to hang on. It was the kind of gritty, travel-tested performance that could set the tone for the Drinkall era.
Kent State finally snaps the skid
Interim coach Mark Carney got a win in his first game, and it was a dramatic one. The Golden Flashes ended a 21-game losing streak by edging Merrimack, 21-17. The turning point came when Da’Realyst Clark returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown with just over five minutes left. Wideout Cade Wolford also starred, turning two catches into two long scores.
Northern Illinois defense slams the door
The Huskies’ defense set the tone in a 19-17 win over Holy Cross. NIU allowed just 217 yards of offense, including only 62 on the ground, and held the Crusaders to 3-for-12 on third down. Quinn Urwiler’s 10 tackles led the way as Thomas Hammock’s squad showed it can win ugly when needed.
Ohio nearly stuns Rutgers
It wasn’t a win, but Ohio looked every bit the part of a MAC title contender despite a 34-31 loss at Rutgers. Graduate QB Parker Navarro earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing three touchdowns and rushing for another, nearly pulling off the upset in Piscataway. Navarro accounted for 332 total yards and looks like a force who can carry the Bobcats deep into conference play.
Buffalo’s Murdock racks up stops
Buffalo fell 23-10 at Minnesota, but linebacker Red Murdock was everywhere. The graduate posted 16 tackles and a sack, the second-highest tackle total in the country during opening weekend. His fourth-down stop in the red zone kept the game scoreless early and showed he’ll be one of the MAC’s top defensive leaders.
As we move into Week 2, the MAC looks balanced, with multiple teams flashing resilience and star power. If Week 1 was any indication, the conference will once again be one of the most entertaining in college football.
