Kent State Athletics
Kent State makes the trip to Tallahassee this weekend for its first-ever meeting with Florida State. The Golden Flashes enter at 1–2 under interim head coach Mark Carney, coming off a hard-fought battle with Buffalo that showcased some progress on both sides of the ball. This matchup, though, represents an entirely different challenge against one of the most explosive teams in the nation.
Dru DeShields has settled in as Kent State’s quarterback, and his performance against Buffalo gave the Flashes reason for optimism. He threw for 279 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground, showing poise and playmaking ability. Wide receiver Cade Wolford has been the breakout star of the offense, leading the nation in yards per catch (31.9) and already finding the end zone four times this season. Establishing those connections will be key if Kent State wants to hang around in Tallahassee.
Florida State enters undefeated at 2–0 and carries a top-10 national ranking — No. 7 in the AP Poll and No. 9 in the Coaches Poll. The Seminoles are averaging 47.7 points per game, good for third in the country, and rank ninth nationally in total offense. Their defense has been just as reliable, holding opponents to 14 points per contest. For Kent State, that means any self-inflicted mistakes could quickly turn into points the other way.
The Golden Flashes have struggled defensively, ranking 125th in scoring defense at 36.7 points allowed per game. That’s a daunting statistic heading into a matchup with a Florida State team that thrives on balance, explosive plays, and a physical running game. Kent State’s front seven will have to hold its ground to avoid getting buried early.
Special teams and field position could provide Kent State with its best opportunities. If the Flashes can steal a possession or two and find explosive plays with Wolford and the passing game, they might be able to keep it interesting.
Florida State has the look of a team chasing a College Football Playoff spot, while Kent State continues to focus on growth under Carney. For the Golden Flashes, Saturday is about competing snap-to-snap, gaining valuable experience, and proving they can trade punches with one of the sport’s elite programs.
