Week 4 gave us clarity in the Big Ten, with several contenders flexing their muscles and a few historic milestones reached across the league.
Ohio State: The top-ranked Buckeyes took care of business with a 37-9 win over Ohio, powered by running back Bo Jackson’s 109-yard effort. The defending national champions continue to look every bit the part of a playoff favorite, sitting at No. 1 in both major polls.
Penn State: James Franklin’s squad remains right on the Buckeyes’ heels. The Nittany Lions rolled Villanova 52-6, improving to 3-0 and keeping their No. 2 national ranking intact. They’ve shown few weaknesses through September.
Michigan: True freshman Bryce Underwood put on a show in Michigan’s 63-3 rout of Central Michigan, throwing for 235 yards and accounting for three touchdowns. His play earned him Big Ten Freshman of the Week, giving Wolverine fans plenty of optimism about the future.
Indiana: The Hoosiers made national noise with a 73-0 demolition of Indiana State. Omar Cooper Jr. set career highs with 207 yards and four touchdowns on 10 catches, earning Offensive Player of the Week honors and cementing Indiana’s place in the AP Top 25 at No. 19.
Iowa: The Hawkeyes not only dominated UMass 47-7, but head coach Kirk Ferentz collected his 206th career win, passing Woody Hayes to become the winningest coach in Big Ten history. To make it sweeter, Kaden Wetjen’s 95-yard punt return touchdown set a new Kinnick Stadium record.
Illinois: The Illini defense suffocated Western Michigan in a 38-0 shutout. Sitting inside the top 10 nationally, Illinois looks like a legitimate challenger in the Big Ten West.
As we move into Week 5, the Big Ten looks top-heavy but loaded with undefeated teams — 11 in total, more than any other conference. With matchups like Michigan at Nebraska and Illinois at Indiana looming, the separation at the top may begin soon.
