Tennessee Athletics
Tennessee left no doubt in its home opener, rolling past East Tennessee State 72-17 in front of a sold-out Neyland Stadium crowd. The Vols piled up 717 yards of total offense, scored in all three phases, and overwhelmed the Buccaneers from the opening drive. Here’s whose stock rose — and whose fell.
📈 Stock Up
Joey Aguilar, QB
Aguilar was surgical, completing 23 of 31 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. He consistently spread the ball around and set the tone early, helping Tennessee rack up 41 first-half points.
Chris Brazzell II & Mike Matthews, WRs
Brazzell and Matthews showcased Tennessee’s big-play ability. Brazzell hauled in nine catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns, while Matthews added six receptions for 111 yards and a 53-yard score. Together, they gave ETSU’s secondary no chance.
Star Thomas, RB
Thomas powered the run game with 69 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries. His ability to finish drives in the red zone gave the Vols offensive balance and prevented ETSU from ever finding momentum.
📉 Stock Down
ETSU’s Offensive Line
The Buccaneers managed just 49 rushing yards on 28 attempts (1.8 yards per carry). They surrendered three sacks and struggled to protect Cade McNamara and Jacolby Criswell, preventing any rhythm offensively.
ETSU Special Teams Coverage
The Bucs gave up 118 yards on punt returns, including a 40-yard burst by Boo Carter that flipped field position early. Tennessee consistently started drives near midfield or better, compounding ETSU’s defensive issues.
ETSU Secondary
Giving up 458 passing yards and four touchdowns speaks for itself. Aguilar, Jake Merklinger, and George MacIntyre completed 73% of their throws combined, with multiple explosive plays downfield.
➖ Holding Steady
Tennessee’s Defense
The Vols weren’t challenged much but did what they needed to — three sacks, seven tackles for loss, and holding ETSU to 2-of-15 on third down. Solid, if unspectacular, against an overmatched opponent.
Closing
Tennessee’s playmakers on both sides of the ball ensured this game was over by halftime. As the Vols prepare for their next test with Georgia, how Aguilar continues to command the offense and how the defense responds against stiffer competition will be crucial storylines to watch.
