Stock Up, Stock Down: Michigan State’s Week 2 Double-OT Win

Michigan State survived a Saturday night thriller in East Lansing, edging Boston College 42-40 in double overtime. Aidan Chiles’ rushing score and two-point conversion pass sealed the Spartans’ victory in front of a raucous Spartan Stadium crowd. Here’s whose stock rose — and whose fell.

Stock Up

QB Aidan Chiles
Chiles was the heartbeat of the offense, responsible for five total touchdowns (four passing, one rushing) while throwing for 231 yards on 19-of-29 passing. Despite taking four sacks, he delivered clutch throws and capped the game with both the touchdown run and the decisive two-point pass in the second overtime.

WR Nick Marsh
Marsh showed why he’s Chiles’ go-to target, hauling in five passes for 68 yards and two touchdowns. His 41-yard score early in the third quarter reignited the Spartans after halftime and gave the offense the spark it needed.

LB Jordan Hall
Defensively, Hall was everywhere. He led the Spartans with 15 total tackles and forced a fumble. His energy helped keep Boston College from breaking the game open in the first half when the defense was on its heels.

Stock Down

Pass Defense
Boston College’s Dylan Lonergan carved up the Spartans, throwing for 390 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. Michigan State’s secondary allowed too many chunk plays, particularly to Lewis Bond (11 catches, 90 yards) and Jeremiah Franklin (8 catches, 84 yards, 1 TD).

Ball Security
Omari Kelly fumbled twice, losing one, while the Spartans coughed up the ball three times overall. Though it didn’t cost them the game this week, turnovers nearly gave Boston College the momentum swing they needed.

Offensive Line Protection
Chiles was sacked four times and often pressured on key downs. The Spartans managed 149 rushing yards, but the inconsistency up front limited balance and forced Chiles into tough spots.

Holding Steady

RB Makhi Frazier
Frazier provided steady production, rushing 17 times for 81 yards. While he didn’t find the end zone, his 4.8 yards per carry kept the Spartans’ offense on schedule and helped set up big passing plays.

The Bottom Line

Michigan State showed grit by rallying late and finishing in dramatic fashion. But if the Spartans want to stay unbeaten, their defense must tighten up against elite passing attacks, and the offensive line has to protect Chiles better. How these players trend will be crucial as Michigan State prepares for its Week 3 matchup.
