Week 1 gave us plenty to chew on in the Big 12, from statement wins to ugly losses. The league is celebrating its 30th season, and right out of the gate it reminded us why Saturdays in this conference never lack for storylines. Here’s what stood out:

TCU Steals the Spotlight
The Horned Frogs couldn’t have scripted it better. A 48-14 beatdown of North Carolina in Bill Belichick’s college debut not only spoiled the national storyline but also put Sonny Dykes’ team in the early driver’s seat for conference bragging rights. TCU’s defense held UNC to just 222 total yards, and safety Bud Clark’s pick-six was the exclamation point.

Cincinnati Shows Fight Despite Loss
The Bearcats fell 27-20 at Nebraska, but linebacker Jake Golday turned heads with 12 tackles and a sack that gave UC a late chance to steal it. First-year coach Scott Satterfield can take encouragement from how physical his defense looked against a Big Ten opponent, even if the end result stung.

Utah Looks Like a Contender
In their first Big 12 game, the Utes made UCLA look overmatched in a 43-10 win at the Rose Bowl. Devon Dampier was sharp, completing 21 of 25 passes and adding 87 rushing yards, while Utah’s lines dominated on both sides. The league named both its offensive and defensive fronts of the week from Salt Lake City—and it’s hard to argue.

Iowa State Finds Its Quarterback
Rocco Becht played like a veteran in the Cyclones’ 55-7 win over South Dakota, completing 19 of 20 passes for 278 yards and three touchdowns. He extended his school-record streak of games with a TD pass to 20, giving Matt Campbell’s team hope that the offense might finally match the defense.

BYU’s Bachmeier Era Begins With a Bang
History was made in Provo when freshman Bear Bachmeier became the first true freshman QB to start for BYU. He responded with five total touchdowns in just two quarters of action during a 69-0 demolition of Portland State. The Cougars might have something special brewing if he continues to grow.

Arizona State Student Section Sets the Tone
The Big 12 rolled out its new “Student Section of the Week” award, and Arizona State’s “Inferno” didn’t disappoint. Over 14,000 students packed the stands for the Sun Devils’ 38-19 win over Northern Arizona, earning the inaugural honor. Commissioner Brett Yormark wants to highlight fan energy, and ASU delivered.

As we move into Week 2, the Big 12 already looks like a league full of intrigue. Utah and TCU made big statements, Iowa State and BYU have young quarterbacks to build around, and Cincinnati showed grit on the road. The conference might not have a clear front-runner yet, but there’s no shortage of storylines to follow.
