Gasparilla Bowl Looks for a Break as NC State Meets Memphis

The Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl has built a reputation for intriguing matchups, even if the finishes have rarely matched the promise.

Played almost exclusively on weekdays and often in the middle of the day, the Gasparilla Bowl has long been a favorite of bowl diehards — games meant to be enjoyed by those who savor matchups more than marquee billing. Yet despite regularly pairing Power conference teams or Power programs against high-end Group of Five contenders, the results have usually been lopsided. Of the 16 editions of the bowl since its inception in 2008, only four have been decided by one score.

That history sets the backdrop for Friday’s meeting between NC State and Memphis, a game that arrives with the sense that this bowl is due for a tighter finish.

NC State (7-5) and Memphis (8-4) will meet for the first time when they square off Friday, Dec. 19, at Raymond James Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. ET (1:30 p.m. CT) with ESPN carrying the broadcast.

The Tigers are making their 12th consecutive bowl appearance, the longest active streak among non–Power 4 programs. Memphis has also developed a reputation for strong postseason performances. Former coach Ryan Silverfield went 4-0 in bowl games with the Tigers, including wins in each of the last three seasons. Silverfield has since departed for Arkansas, leaving assistant coach Reggie Howard to serve as interim head coach after Charles Huff’s move from Southern Miss.

Memphis enters the game after a late-season slide, but the program’s bowl pedigree remains a point of pride. The Tigers own an earlier win this season over Arkansas and have shown the ability to generate offense in spurts, particularly when they find rhythm on third down.

NC State, meanwhile, is looking to reverse its own postseason trend. The Wolfpack have not won a bowl game since the 2017 season and are 0-5 in bowl appearances since then under coach Dave Doeren. Still, this trip to Tampa represents NC State’s sixth straight bowl appearance and marks the fifth time in the last six seasons the program has reached at least seven wins.

The Wolfpack finished 4-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play and picked up notable victories over Virginia and then-No. 8 Georgia Tech. Offensively, NC State has been efficient in scoring situations, bringing a top-10 red zone offense into the matchup after scoring on 38 of its 41 red zone trips this season.

Quarterback CJ Bailey leads the Wolfpack attack and will be central to determining how the game unfolds. NC State’s hopes hinge on Bailey’s ability to stay comfortable in the pocket and consistently convert short and intermediate throws to keep the chains moving.

Memphis will counter with an aggressive defensive approach designed to disrupt timing, while hoping its offense can regain early-season form. NC State’s defense has allowed yardage, leaving the door open for the Tigers to make plays if they can sustain drives.

Oddsmakers list NC State as a 5½-point favorite, with an over/under of 58½, reflecting expectations of an offensive-minded game. Whether that translates into a close finish remains to be seen, but both teams bring something to prove.

For Memphis, it is a chance to reaffirm a bowl identity built on winning, even amid transition. For NC State, it is an opportunity to finally turn consistent bowl appearances into a postseason victory.

After years of decisive outcomes, the Gasparilla Bowl once again sets the stage for a matchup that feels overdue for drama.
