For nearly a decade, UCF and North Carolina have circled each other on the scheduling calendar, but circumstances always kept the two programs apart. That changes Saturday afternoon at the Bounce House, when the Knights (2-0) finally meet the Tar Heels (2-1) for the first time on the gridiron.
Scott Frost’s second tenure in Orlando couldn’t have started much better. UCF gritted out a season-opening win over Jacksonville State and followed that up with a 68-7 dismantling of North Carolina A&T. Those results extend Frost’s personal winning streak at UCF to 15 games, dating back to the 2017 season. Another victory Saturday would tie him with Nick Saban’s 16-game run at Alabama from 2017–18.
On the other sideline, it’s a brand-new era for the Tar Heels. Bill Belichick — yes, that Bill Belichick — is in his first season in Chapel Hill, already 2-1 after a commanding 41-6 win over Richmond. While Frost and Belichick have never faced off as head coaches, they are familiar with each other. Frost was a defensive back for the New York Jets in 1998–99 when Belichick served as defensive coordinator.
What to Watch
- UCF’s rushing attack: Against N.C. A&T, the Knights piled up seven rushing touchdowns, just one shy of the program record. Jaden Nixon and RJ Harvey have given this offense a thunder-and-lightning combination, and the Tar Heels will have their hands full up front.
- Defensive dominance: UCF’s defense has yet to give up a first-half point this season and has pitched five scoreless quarters out of eight. That early dominance has allowed the Knights to dictate tempo and force opponents to abandon their game plans.
- History delayed: The programs first scheduled a home-and-home series back in 2016. A 2018 game was canceled by Hurricane Florence, while the 2020 meeting fell victim to COVID-19’s conference-only schedules. Saturday finally brings the matchup fans have been waiting for.
The Stakes
A win would give UCF its 16th straight victory under Frost, mark a second consecutive 3-0 start, and improve the Big 12’s record to 5-1 against the ACC this year. For North Carolina, it’s a chance to spoil UCF’s streak and give Belichick his first signature win in Chapel Hill.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on FOX, with the Bounce House expected to be packed and loud.
