Toledo Looks to Keep Rolling as MAC Play Begins at Western Michigan

Toledo kicks off its Mid-American Conference slate Saturday afternoon when the Rockets travel to Waldo Stadium to face Western Michigan (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPN+).

The Rockets (2-1) are coming off a 60-0 demolition of Morgan State, a game that saw Jason Candle’s squad pile up a program-record 43 points in the second quarter. It was the kind of performance that underscored why league coaches picked Toledo to win the MAC this season. Senior backs Chip Trayanum and Kenji Christian each found the end zone twice, while wideout Junior Vandeross hauled in two touchdowns of his own from quarterback Tucker Gleason. Defensively, the Rockets allowed just 56 total yards — only 12 more than the school record for fewest yards surrendered in a game.

Candle, now the winningest head coach in program history with 75 career victories, has built this team on balance and experience. Gleason sits second in the MAC in passing yards (199.7 per game), Trayanum leads the league in touchdowns (five), and Vandeross ranks top three in both catches and yards per game. On the other side of the ball, linebacker K’Von Sherman just posted a career day with nine tackles and four tackles for loss, nearly tying a school record.

For Western Michigan (0-3), the early portion of the schedule has been unforgiving. Losses to Michigan State, North Texas, and No. 9 Illinois have left the Broncos searching for traction under third-year head coach Lance Taylor. A year ago, WMU managed to hang around in Toledo before the Rockets stormed back for a 49-31 win. The Broncos will need to protect the football and find offensive rhythm to avoid a repeat of that second-half collapse.

The history of this series leans heavily toward Toledo, which holds a 46-32 advantage and has won 10 of the last 14 matchups. Still, MAC openers tend to carry an extra edge, and the Rockets know that records mean less once league play begins.

If Toledo’s offensive firepower travels and the defense maintains its current form, the Rockets have a strong chance to extend their winning streak to three and reinforce their standing as the MAC’s team to beat. For WMU, Saturday represents both a chance to reset the season and to spoil their rival’s championship aspirations before they can gain momentum.

Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. in Kalamazoo, with live coverage on ESPN+ and the Rocket Radio Network.
