Duke Athletics
The start of ACC play always feels like the true beginning of the season, and for Duke, it couldn’t come with more significance. The Blue Devils (1-2) return home Saturday afternoon to host unbeaten NC State (3-0, 1-0 ACC) at Wallace Wade Stadium in a rivalry that’s defined generations of North Carolina football. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN2.
Setting the Stage
This will be the 86th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Duke holding a 43-37-5 edge in the series. The Blue Devils have claimed four of the last five, including last year’s 29-19 victory in Raleigh. A win Saturday would give Duke three straight over the Pack for the first time since the mid-1980s.
The game doubles as Homecoming for Duke, and history favors the Blue Devils. Since 2011, they are 10-3 in Homecoming contests.
Manny Diaz’s Assessment
Head coach Manny Diaz didn’t mince words after Duke’s disappointing showing at Tulane. “We just didn’t play to our standard in any of the three phases of the game,” Diaz said. “Defensively, the numbers trend where they normally do, but our pass defense is far from where it was. We’ve got to grow up in a hurry in our secondary, especially against the best passing offense and quarterback we’ve faced this year”.
Diaz pointed to third-down failures as a backbreaker: “In the last two games, we had chances on third and longs when we had momentum, and we let them convert. That’s where we’re giving away control of games”.
On offense, Diaz noted Duke has shown explosiveness in the run game but hasn’t finished in the red zone. “We’re more explosive in the run game than we have been, but we’ve got to run it better in the red zone. Otherwise, we’re putting too much on our quarterback in tight spaces,” he explained.
Key Players to Watch
- Darian Mensah, QB – The redshirt sophomore transfer has thrown for 300+ yards in three straight games and ranks third nationally in passing yards per game (345.3).
- Vincent Anthony Jr., DE – Already named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week this season, Anthony enters tied for the national lead with 5.0 sacks.
- Nate Sheppard, RB – The freshman has flashed big-play ability. Diaz emphasized his knack for making defenders miss in space, calling him “explosive”.
On the other sideline, NC State comes in tested. Dave Doeren’s group has already beaten three quality opponents and enters ranked in the “receiving votes” category of both major polls.
What’s at Stake
For Duke, this is about more than just bragging rights. Beating NC State would not only stabilize a 1-2 start but also keep momentum alive in Diaz’s second season. “If we talk about winning the league, you have to win at home first. And you have to win your in-state games,” Diaz said.
With Homecoming energy, a long rivalry history, and two coaching staffs that know each other all too well, Saturday feels like one of those ACC games that will set the tone for both teams’ seasons.
