Bowling Green Migrates South for Matchup with Cardinals

Bowling Green heads south this weekend for one of its toughest matchups of the season — a trip to Louisville. The Falcons are looking to continue their growth under Eddie George while facing a Cardinals team loaded with talent on both sides of the ball.

George made it clear during his weekly press conference that he sees progress but also plenty of work still to do.

“I feel good about where we are as a team,” George said. “We’re growing and going in the right direction, but we’re still becoming one unit. The thing I like is how we handled adversity. You watch the tape and you see plenty of mistakes, but then you also see how close we are.”

That closeness will be tested against a Louisville roster George described as “built to compete for a championship in their conference and possibly be a playoff team.”

Cleaning Up Mistakes
For Bowling Green, the biggest key is eliminating self-inflicted wounds. The Falcons were flagged for nine pre-snap penalties last week, something George knows will be devastating against Louisville’s aggressive defense.

“Those are drive killers,” he said. “We certainly cannot do that this week against this unit because they thrive off your mistakes. Last year Louisville had 34 sacks. This year through two games, second in the country, 10 sacks. We have to be very efficient offensively, first and second down. That has to be corrected.”

Containing Isaac Brown
The matchup most likely to define the night comes when Bowling Green’s defense tries to slow down Louisville’s star running back, Isaac Brown.

“All he needs is 16 inches of daylight,” George said. “He’s explosive, he can make you pay. He might have a room at the Heisman house one day.”

Brown has already shown the ability to stay patient and then break free late, something Bowling Green’s defense must keep in mind for all four quarters. Gap discipline will be critical.

Pressure on Both Sides
George liked the pressure his defensive line created last week but admitted Louisville’s offensive line is another challenge entirely. “They’re very athletic. They come off the ball with really good intentions. They’re well coached up front. It’s going to be a great opportunity for our boys to sharpen iron against a really good unit.”

Special Teams Edge
One bright spot for Bowling Green has been special teams. Kicker Jackson Kleather earned MAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors, and George praised both his preparation and consistency. “He’s going to be needed throughout the course of this year because there might be some games where it comes down to that kick,” George said.

The Bottom Line
Bowling Green is improving, but this weekend brings a different type of test. Louisville is deep, experienced, and explosive. For the Falcons, the formula is simple: avoid penalties, stay disciplined on defense, and capitalize on special teams.

George knows his team has a chance, but he also knows the margin for error is razor thin.

“We’re going down there to try to win,” he said. “It’s going to be an awesome experience, and an awesome opportunity for us to compete against them.”
