Indiana Hosts Indiana State Under the Friday Night Lights

Indiana Athletics

Fresh off a 2–0 start, Indiana looks to keep things rolling when it welcomes in-state opponent Indiana State to Memorial Stadium on Friday night. The Hoosiers enter ranked No. 19/22 nationally and will try to extend their perfect record before Big Ten play begins.

Indiana’s Hot Start
Under Curt Cignetti, Indiana has quickly shed the “rebuilding” tag. The Hoosiers are averaging more than 40 points per game while leaning on a bruising ground attack that churns out over 300 yards per contest. The defense has matched that energy, allowing just 11.5 points per game and making life miserable for opposing quarterbacks.

This matchup gives IU the chance to sharpen execution, especially in the passing game, while staying healthy heading into a rugged Big Ten slate.

Indiana State’s Challenge
On the other sideline, Curt Mallory’s Sycamores are also 2–0 and chasing their first 3–0 start since 1984. Indiana State has shown balance, with quarterback Elijah Owens and running back Plez Lawrence both providing steady production. Still, history isn’t on their side — the Sycamores are 0–7 all-time against IU and 0–20 against current Big Ten programs.

To hang around, ISU will need to protect the football, hit on big plays, and avoid getting overwhelmed by Indiana’s speed and depth.

What to Watch

  • Can IU’s rushing attack keep pounding out 300+ yards?
  • Will the Hoosiers get more consistency through the air?
  • Does Indiana State have an answer for IU’s defensive front?

Kickoff Info
Friday night’s game kicks at 6:30 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network, with Lisa Byington on the call.
