Spartans Set to Host Youngstown State After Emotional Win

After a double-overtime thriller at Boston College, Michigan State returns to Spartan Stadium this Saturday looking to carry momentum into a matchup with Youngstown State. Head coach Jonathan Smith met with the media Monday, reflecting on his team’s gritty win and the lessons it provided heading into Week 3.

Smith called Saturday’s contest a “great college football game” and emphasized how his team responded under pressure. “I feel like it could be a growth game for us to be able to finish the game we did against a quality opponent,” Smith said. “Because a lot of these games, they come down to the wire like that, and we’ve got to gain some confidence and continue to move forward.”

Quarterback Aidan Chiles was once again at the center of that effort. The junior accounted for five touchdowns—four through the air and one on the ground—while showing composure in tight moments. Smith praised his decision-making and ability to extend plays, noting that even subtle adjustments like checking down and recognizing protection breakdowns were key.

Multiple receivers stepped up for Michigan State, while Ernest Hausmann and the defense did just enough to outlast Boston College quarterback Dylan Lonergan, who gave the Spartans fits with his quick release and accuracy. Smith admitted his unit needs to do a better job disrupting the pocket moving forward.

Still, the win marked a big step for a program trying to re-establish itself in the Big Ten. Now comes the challenge of avoiding a letdown. Youngstown State, an FCS power with a proud tradition, comes to East Lansing with nothing to lose and everything to gain. The Penguins will test MSU’s focus after such an emotional road victory.

For the Spartans, it’s about sharpening execution in the red zone, limiting penalties, and cleaning up short-yardage situations—areas Smith said cost them opportunities last week. Special teams and late-game efficiency were also points of emphasis in his postgame review.

If Michigan State can channel the confidence gained in Boston and match it with sharper execution, Saturday should provide another chance to grow before diving back into the heart of the Big Ten slate.

Kickoff is set for Saturday at Spartan Stadium, where MSU will look to build on its early-season momentum and continue developing the toughness that Jonathan Smith believes will define his team this fall.
