Tennessee left no doubt in its home opener, overwhelming ETSU 72-17 on Saturday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 101,915 at Neyland Stadium. The victory marked the Vols’ 500th on-field win at historic Shields-Watkins Field and extended their home winning streak to nine games.
Tennessee (2-0) jumped on the Buccaneers immediately, scoring touchdowns on its first and third drives of the game and racing to a 24-0 lead after the opening quarter. Quarterback Joey Aguilar led the charge with 288 yards and two touchdowns through the air, including a 53-yard strike to Mike Matthews in the second quarter. Freshman Jake Merklinger added two more scoring tosses after halftime to push the Vols’ total to four passing touchdowns.
The ground game was just as dominant, churning out 259 yards and five scores. Star Thomas powered his way to three touchdowns and 69 yards, while Peyton Lewis and Daune Morris each added rushing scores. Tennessee’s offensive line paved the way for 717 total yards on 100 plays, averaging 7.2 yards per snap.
Chris Brazzell II headlined the receiving corps with nine catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns, while Matthews posted six receptions for 111 yards.
On defense, the Vols smothered ETSU (1-1), limiting the Buccaneers to just 216 total yards and 10 first downs. Tennessee registered three sacks and seven tackles for loss, led by Tyre West and Joshua Josephs in the trenches. The Vols also dominated special teams, highlighted by Boo Carter’s 94 punt return yards and kicker Max Gilbert’s perfect 3-for-3 night, capped by a booming 53-yarder in the fourth quarter.
ETSU’s lone highlights came on a short touchdown pass by Cade McNamara in the second quarter, a 41-yard field goal in the third, and a 20-yard scoring run from Jason Albritton in the fourth.
The Vols improved to 888-417-53 all-time on the field and 26-4 at Neyland Stadium under head coach Josh Heupel. Tennessee also moved to 2-0 all-time against ETSU, outscoring the Buccaneers by an average of 55.5 points across the two meetings.
Tennessee now turns its attention to SEC play, while ETSU looks to regroup in nonconference action.
