Kent State’s trip to Jones AT&T Stadium quickly turned into an uphill battle Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Flashes fell 62-14 to Texas Tech. The Red Raiders scored touchdowns on their first three possessions and never looked back, building a 48-0 halftime lead before cruising to their second win of the season.
The Golden Flashes (1-1) struggled to find consistency on offense through the first three quarters, managing just 146 total yards before finally breaking through late. Sophomore quarterback Dru DeShields provided both bright spots in the fourth quarter, capping an 83-yard drive with a 10-yard rushing touchdown and later finding Cade Wolford on a 16-yard scoring pass following a Texas Tech turnover.
DeShields finished with 116 yards through the air on 7-of-15 passing, while adding 22 yards on the ground. Wolford’s touchdown grab was one of two catches for the redshirt junior, and Ardell Banks led the receiving corps with 49 yards on two receptions, including a 38-yarder that set up the Flashes deep in Red Raider territory. Running back Gavin Garcia carried 12 times for 25 yards, while Marques Hicks provided a spark with 17 yards on two attempts.
Texas Tech’s offense was relentless, rolling up 601 total yards and spreading the production across multiple playmakers. Quarterback Behren Morton threw for 258 yards and three scores, while running back Adam Hill gashed the Kent State defense for 127 yards on 16 carries.
Defensively, Kent State was paced by Sayed Abuhamdeh, who tallied seven tackles, a tackle for loss, and forced a fumble that Terrell Miller recovered in the fourth quarter. Nylan Brown and Joel Cordoba also recorded seven stops apiece as the Flashes tried to slow down a Texas Tech attack that averaged 7.5 yards per play.
Kent State now turns its attention to the start of Mid-American Conference play, hosting Buffalo next weekend at Dix Stadium.
