The Bowling Green State University football team mounted a strong second-half push on the road at Nippert Stadium, but the comeback bid came up short as the Falcons fell 34-20 to Cincinnati on Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons (1-1) outscored the Bearcats 17-13 after halftime and forced their first turnover of the season, but an early 21-0 deficit proved too much to overcome.
Quarterback Drew Pyne led the offense with an efficient 29-for-36 performance, tallying 274 yards and his first touchdown as a Falcon. Tight end Jyrin Johnson was his top target, hauling in seven catches for 80 yards, including a 31-yard score midway through the third quarter. On the ground, freshman Cameron Pettaway paced the rushing attack with 72 yards on 13 carries, while Mar’Kel Porter added a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
How It Happened
Cincinnati jumped out quickly, scoring on a 44-yard strike from Brendan Sorsby to Cyrus Allen and adding two more touchdown passes in the second quarter for a 21-0 lead. Bowling Green pieced together an 18-play drive before halftime, capped by a 25-yard Jackson Kleather field goal to make it 21-3 at the break.
The Bearcats tacked on a field goal early in the third quarter, but the Falcons responded after linebacker Dorian Pringle forced a fumble at the UC 34. Two plays later, Pyne connected with Johnson for a 31-yard touchdown, trimming the margin to 24-10. Cincinnati answered with a Sorsby rushing score late in the quarter to re-extend its advantage.
Bowling Green refused to quit, as Porter capped a 65-yard march with a short touchdown run to pull within 31-17. After a Bearcats field goal, Kleather added his second make of the game from 30 yards to finish the scoring at 34-20.
