The Tennessee Sports Writers Association named Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia the organization’s Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, the second season in a row that the graduate quarterback has received the recognition after helping the Commodores open the year with a win.
On Saturday night, the Albuquerque, New Mexico, native connected on 20-of-25 pass attempts for 275 yards and three touchdowns, finishing with 319 yards of total offense after adding 44 yards on the ground in Vandy’s 45-3 defeat of Charleston Southern. That included throwing for 270 yards and all three scores in the opening 30 minutes of the contest as the Dores built a 28-0 halftime lead.
With the effort, Pavia not only earned the Commodores’ highest Pro Football Focus grade for the week on offense but he also became the first player in school history to complete 80 percent of his passes or better in a game on three occasions in a career.
Pavia entered the season on the watch list for five national end-of-year honors including the Walter Camp and Maxwell Player of the Year Awards, the Davey O’Brien Award, the Manning Award and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
He and Vanderbilt will return to action on Saturday at Virginia Tech, with kickoff in Blacksburg scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
