Toledo Looks to Bounce Back in Home Opener

The Toledo Rockets return to the Glass Bowl on Saturday night for their 2025 home opener, hosting the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a non-conference showdown under the lights (7 p.m./ESPN+).

Toledo (0-1) is coming off a hard-fought 24-16 loss at Kentucky last weekend. The Rockets nearly pulled off a late comeback, scoring with under two minutes left, but couldn’t come up with the onside kick to get the ball back.

Despite the loss, there were positives to build on. Toledo out-gained the Wildcats, 329-305, and forced two turnovers. Senior safety Emmanuel McNeil-Warren set the tone defensively with 11 tackles, a forced fumble and recovery — a performance that earned him East-West Shrine Bowl “Breakout Defensive Player of the Week” honors. Linebacker K’Von Sherman chipped in eight stops, while cornerback Avery Smith added six of his own.

Quarterback Tucker Gleason carried the offense, completing 23-of-40 passes for 270 yards with a touchdown while also running for another score. Wide receiver Junior Vandeross III was his top target, pulling in seven catches for 88 yards and a touchdown. Ohio State transfer Chip Trayanum saw his first action as a Rocket, rushing for 41 yards on 14 carries.

Western Kentucky (2-0, 1-0 CUSA) comes in hot after two convincing wins at home — a 41-24 victory over Sam Houston State and a 55-6 blowout of North Alabama. The Hilltoppers also have the confidence of knowing they won last year’s meeting, edging Toledo 26-21 in Bowling Green, Ky. That contest remains the only previous matchup between the two programs.

Saturday also brings extra meaning for Toledo head coach Jason Candle. Now in his 10th season, Candle (73-41) sits tied with Gary Pinkel for most wins in school history. A victory over WKU would give him sole possession of the top spot.

By the Numbers

  • Series history: Western Kentucky leads 1-0.

  • Toledo’s streak: The Rockets have not had a losing season since 2009, the third-longest active streak in the FBS behind Alabama and Boise State.

  • MAC dominance: Since Candle took over in 2016, Toledo has won 72 games, the most in the Mid-American Conference.

  • Watch list Rockets: Eight players earned preseason recognition, including Gleason, Vandeross, Trayanum, Smith, and McNeil-Warren.

Atmosphere

The game is being billed as “The Biggest Party in Toledo,” with a full slate of promotions and fan engagement to kick off the home schedule. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. with Michael Reghi and Jerod Cherry on the ESPN+ call. Rocket fans can also tune in to the Rocket Radio Network beginning with the 6:00 p.m. pregame show.
